Dresscode

Dubai is a cosmopolitan city and a diverse melting pot where almost all attire and cultural expressions are accepted. Swimwear is permissible at beaches, waterparks, public pools, and spa areas but is not considered appropriate in areas such as business districts and shopping malls. Dressing conservatively is appreciated in Dubai's historic neighborhoods and places of worship. There are specific requirements for entering a mosque, like wearing clothing that covers shoulders, arms and legs – and head scarves for women.

Is Tipping Customary?

To tip or not to tip? The short answer is, there are no rules when it comes to tipping in Dubai. How much you tip varies from profession to profession and is also largely down to personal preference. It is customary to tip in most cases, but it certainly isn’t compulsory. Everyone arrives in Dubai with their own customs and expectations but one thing that's really consistent is the high level of service.

Tax-Free Shopping

The UAE introduced a Value-Added Tax (VAT) of 5% in 2018, but tourists can still enjoy tax-free shopping. Refunds for VAT are only available on goods purchased during your stay in the UAE that will be exported.

Refunds are not applicable on anything that has been consumed – fully or partly – in the UAE, as well as goods that are not accompanied by the tourist when leaving the country.

How can I claim a refund on my shopping?

While at the store, request a Tax Free purchase, valid on a minimum expenditure of AED250.

Present your passport to be scanned for use on the payment system.

Allow the shop assistant to attach a Tax Free tag to the back of the sales receipt.

A digital Tax Free form is created, ensure you validate it upon departure.

Tax Free tags need to be validated within 90 days of the purchase date.
